From the Syracuse Herald Journal, October, 8, 1994: Virgil — Eugene Barnum, 97, formerly of Washington Street, died Friday at Highgate Manor Nursing Home, Cortland, after a long illness. A native of Niagara Falls, Mr. Barnum resided in the Virgil area most of his life. He was the owner from 1927 to 1944 of the Flemingville IGA and from 1944 to the early 1950s of the Virgil IGA. Mr. Barnum was also a caretaker years ago of the Virgil Rural Cemetery. His wife, the former Lena Mae Cornelius, died in 1984 and a son, Frederick E., died in 1993. Mr. Barnum was a member of the Virgil Fire Department. Surviving are a son, Richard P. of Virgil; a daughter, Mary B. McCall of East Homer; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden.
