Notes for Harm VALENTIEN

At the time of the 1910 US Census, Harm Valentien/Valentine was living with the family of his daughter and his son-in-law, Elja Barnum, in Brookfield, Worth County, Iowa. He was listed as widowed, although cemetery records show that his wife did not die until 1928.

Harm and Emma also had a son, Harm, Jr., (1879-1887).
Rochester State Hospital opened January 1, 1879. The first cemetery, named Rosemont Cemetery, was used from 1879 to 1897. The location is unknown today, as there are no tombstones, but it is thought to be close to the railroad tracks immediately north of the hospital. The cemetery plot map has survived but not the sexton's record, if it ever existed.
A second cemetery was begun after 1897 in what is now Quarry Hill Park. Eleven tombstones remain although there were hundreds of burials. The Olmsted County Court House, Recorder's Office, has the cemetery records for this cemetery. The records (3 books) contain the lot number for each burial, case number and burial dates. Death dates are complete only for the years 1912-1915.

Interestingly, Harm Valentine has another gravesite in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, Worth, Iowa, where his gravestone inscription reads "Grandfather".
