From the Lansing State Journal, May 29, 2008: Velma R. Barnum, East Lansing, MI At rest, Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Burcham Hills. Velma R. Barnum was born on October 14, 1904 in Hastings, Michigan, the daughter of Barbara (Alwine) and Stanley Robleski. On July 21, 1928 she married Shirley Albert Barnum. She served as Corporate Secretary for the family business, Barnum and Tenny Body Shop, keeping meticulous financial records until her retirement in 1975. Velma liked music, and she and Barney loved to ballroom dance. She traveled extensively and favored the Caribbean Islands. She bowled well into her '70s, was an avid reader and card player, and was a volunteer at Sparrow Hospital for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Resurrection Parish since 1930. Most of all she enjoyed being with her family. Velma prepared many fine celebrations. "Worrying" the holiday turkey was her specialty. The greatest gifts to her family were the high standards she set through example - integrity, work ethic, quality, generosity, fairness, love and kindness. Her twinkling eyes and beautiful smile and sense of style will be missed by all who knew her. Surviving are beloved daughter, Joanne MacDonald; She was preceded in death by her husband, Shirley A. "Barney" Barnum in 1985; sons, Robert (2006) and Ronald (2003) Barnum; and daughter-in-law, Lois Barnum (2001). Velma was grateful to Marlene Pugh for her dedicated care giving, and to the caregivers and nursing staff on the fourth floor at Burcham Hills for their tender, loving, and compassionate care. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Church of the Resurrection. The Rite of Committal will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Friday, from 6-8 p.m. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m.
