Notes for Robert Charles BARNUM


Robert Charles Barnum Colonel, USA ret.
Lansing, MI
Born January 3, 1933 and died September 22, 2006 at his home following
a brief but gallant fight with cancer. Bob retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Army after 31 years having served 25 of those in the Military Police Corps. His service included two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded a Bronze
Star for Meritorious Service in commanding prisoner of war camps. Bob completed his Army career as the Commander, U.S. Army Retraining Brigade, Fort Riley, KS. Upon military retirement Bob continued in leadership serving for 11 years as the Commissioner of Youth Services for the State of Kansas. Bob was a proud graduate of Michigan State University and the Canadian Royal Mounted Police Academy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, father, S.A. Barnum and his brother, Ron. He is lovingly survived by his mother, Velma, his sister, Joann, his son, Michael and wife Barbara, his daughter, Terra and husband Kevin, his son, David and wife Diane, his son, Matt, and his love of the past few years, Gail, and 5 granddaughters, Jessica, Tracy, Casey, Lauren, and Kelli. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at the Church of the Resurrection, 1505 E. Michigan Ave. with the Rev. Fr. William J. Koenigsknecht as celebrant. Burial
will follow at Deepdale Memorial Park, military honors will be under the auspices of Michigan National Guard. Family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project
(www.woundedwarriorprmect.org) or the Okemos Community
Special Needs Kid's Camp.
