From The Chicago Tribune, November 06, 2003: Ronald S. Barnum, A.S.I.D., of Chicago, noted home furnishings design and marketing specialist of international stature, succumbed Thursday evening, October 30, in Lansing, Michigan while visiting his family. A memorial celebration of Ron's life will be held in Chicago on Saturday, November 8, from 5:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. at 175 E. Delaware, John Hancock Condominium Residences. Born in Lansing, he graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. in industrial and interior design. Starting his professional career in Chicago at Marshall Field & Company in 1960, he then became a key member of the corporate staff of Sears Roebuck. In the 1970's, he was the National Design Director for J.C. Penney in NYC, and Corporate Design Director for Gabberts Furniture chain in Minneapolis, Dallas and Denver. In 1980, he and fellow designer, Dick Butler, opened The House Store, Ltd., an innovative four-store chain in Chicago and suburbs, one stop shopping that was high-style, flexible, functional, and affordable. Ron will be missed by clients, friends and family. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. S.A. (Velma) Barnum; a brother, Bob Barnum, and a sister, Jo MacDonald, all of Lansing, and a number of loving nieces and nephews.
