From the Contra Costa Times, March 15, 2005: Earl Ronald Barnum passed away at home in Alamo after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Dunsmuir, CA on May 31, 1931 to Earl and Anita Barnum, he attended Dunsmuir H.S. and Oregon State Univ. on a football scholarship. He left school to serve in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War, serving on the USS Los Angeles. He then joined the Seabees and his outfit was one of the first to establish a foothold at Subic Bay in the Philippines. He returned to Eureka after the war where he attended Humboldt State where he was active in football and track. Earl was inducted into the football hall of fame for his outstanding performance on the field. Earl began a long career for Dinwiddie Construction Co. during college and eventually became General Superintendent overseeing and working on many San Francisco high-rise projects as well as various other projects. He was still affiliated with Hathaway-Dinwiddie until very recently. Earl was an expert fly fisherman, an avid hunter, loved a good game of tennis and enjoyed skiing. He loved time spent at his Tahoe City home and his cabin at Pepe Place in the Ishii Wilderness area. He will be missed by his loving wife, Shirley; beloved sons, Earl Scott (Sabrina), Timothy (Elaine), and Todd, his grandchildren, Karyne, Travis, Eric, Brandon, Wesliegh, Bailey, Sidney, Casie, Allie and Andrew, and his many friends. There will be a Vigil at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave., at 7:00 pm, Wednesday. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Walnut Creek at 1:30 pm Thursday, March 17.
