A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From the Chronicle Telegram, Elyria, Ohio, Wednesday, May 2, 1990: Former Berea and Midpark High School English teacher and Berea School District Teacher of the Year, Mary Lou Collins (nee Barnum), 58, of Boston died Sunday in Toronto of cancer.
A native of Berea, she lived in Berea until her marriage four years ago to Bud Collins, NBC tennis commentator and travel columnist for the Boston Globe. An avid photographer, Mrs. Collins often illustrated her husband's newspaper articles. Mr. Collins is also a native of Berea and the couple attended Berea High together. They last visited the area in November when they were the subject of a Chronicle-Telegram article. Mrs. Collins received her bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1953 and a master's degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1980. She worked briefly as a newspaper reporter before joining the school district, where she taught for 16 years.
She was named a Jennings Scholar for her outstanding teaching ability. Survivors include her husband, Bud Collins; daughters, Betsy of Virginia, Kristin of Denver, Gretchen at home, and Sharon Monahan of New York; stepdaughter, Suzanna Collins of Lincoln, Mass.; stepson, Rob Lacy at home; mother, Violet Barnum of Berea; sisters, Shirley Moon and Kathleen Sawyer; and granddaughter, Caitlin Monahan. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Kilius, in 1969, and by her father, J. Elmer Barnum. Services were to be held this morning at St. Mary Catholic Church, Berea. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
