Notes for Margaret Lucille MOHR

From the Hood River News, 10 Aug 2001: Margaret Lucille Furrow, age 88, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on July 22, 2001 in Medford, Ore. A Memorial Mass and celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Aug. 17, 2001 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Born on Feb. 18, 1913 in Hood River, she was the daughter of native A.A. Mohr and Margaret Cochran Mohr and granddaughter of Pine Grove pioneer Peter Mohr, an 1881 immigrant from Germany. Margaret loved the Hood River Valley and chose to reside in the Pine Grove and Odell areas nearly her entire life. One year following her graduation from Hood River High School in 1930, she climbed Mt. Hood for the first time. After a brief period of working at Meier and Frank in Portland she returned to care for her brothers and sisters when her mother had to enter a tuberculosis sanitarium. Notable for always working on needlecraft she was further renowned for her hand-cranked ice cream and home made pies at church and community functions. Her table and home always had room for a "few extra" family and friends. Frequently she would send her husband or children to the garden or cellar for another measure of fresh-picked or home preserved food. Every year she "put up" a thousand jars of fruit, vegetables, pickles, meats and jams. Always generous in sharing her time and skills she served on local election boards in the Altar Society of St. Mary's Catholic Church, as Boy Scout Den Mother and in the PTA's of Central Vale Elementary School, Mid Valley Junior High and Wy'east High School. For years she had at least one child in each school. The Odell Lions Club honored her in 1981 and 1982 with the Lioness of the year award. As a frequent docent at the Hood River Historical Museum she delighted in conversation with both the "locals" she had known as children and the newly arrived "surfers". She and Bill enjoyed numerous camper trips throughout the western U.S., Canada and Mexico, many as leaders of the Good Sam Club. Their last big solo trip was a drive to Alaska in 1990. Slowed by diminished memory and vitality the last few years, she and Bill moved to an assisted living apartment in Medford last summer. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, William "Bill" Furrow, and eight of their nine children: William Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Jacksonville; Mary Carol and her husband, Dick Berg, of Sedona, Ariz.; Barbara Otter of San Mateo, California, and her son, John Eric Otter, of Los Angeles; Frank of Anchorage, Alaska, and his children, Christopher and Jill, Tom and his wife, Roberta, and their children Michael and Jennifer of Hood River, Richard of Odell, Theresa of Spokane, Wash., and Stephen of Willets, Calif. He is also survived by his stepchildren Heather and her husband, Richard Hicks, and their children, Trista and Hunter of Parkdale, and Amanda and husband, Joseph Davidson, of Portland. Her second child, a Navy Pilot, killed in 1966, is commemorated by the John E. Furrow Award at Hood River High School. Her loss will also be felt by 19 nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and their families, many of whom still reside in Hood River County. The oldest of seven, she is survived by her brother, James Mohr of West Lake, Ore., and sister Patricia Pearson and family of Amboy, Wash. Memorial contributions may be made to an Alzheimer's organization c/o Anderson Funeral Home, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.
