From The Times Record, Troy, New York, Saturday, December 5, 1964: Zera D. Link, 88, veteran of the Spanish-American War and former fire department captain, died this morning in the Samaritan Hospital after a long illness. He was also formerly with the City Welfare Dept, veterans division, before the department was merged with the Rensselaer County department. Mr. Link was former captain of the Trojan Hook and Ladder Co., Truck S. He was one of three firemen injured on April 18, 1917, in the Mohican fire in Troy. Three firemen were killed in the blaze. Prior to that he was a member of the old Bussey Steamer Co., a volunteer company, and was past president of the Troy Exempt Firemen's Association.
Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Philander and Mary Hicks Link. He served with the 2nd Regiment in the Spanish-American War and later was an organizer of Marcus D. Russell Camp Spanish War Veterans. He was past commander of the camp and also had been a state officer of the Spanish War Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, the former Anna Barnum Howarth; a daughter, Mrs. Caroline Smith of Troy; a sister, Mrs. Harry Hourigan of Cohoes and a niece; Mrs. Hazel McPherson of Troy. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
