Notes for Helen BARNUM


Obituary from an unidentified contemporary newspaper: Helen B. Fowlston went to be with her Lord on January 12, 2008. She was born on July 19, 1910 in New Jersey, the daughter of Nora (Pilcher) Barnum and James Whitney Barnum. The family moved to Oneonta in 1913. She graduated from Oneonta High School and Oneonta State and taught in Castleton-on the Hudson. She married Cecil S. Fowlston in 1932 and moved to Franklin in 1933. Franklin was her home for 67 years. She was a career homemaker, wife and mother and her family always came first. She was very active in the former Congregational Baptist Church serving on the board of trustees. She was past president of the Women’s Federation and treasurer for many years. She helped organize and was chairman of the church’s Fair Project, which had a booth at the Delaware County Fair for 17 years. She also was a member of the Onesiphorai Reading Club, Order of the Eastern Star, and former member of the Franklin Craft Club, Franklin Historical Society, and the bridge club. An avid reader all her life, she was an active member of the Friends of the Franklin Library spending many hours volunteering her time so that others could share in her love of reading. In 1963, she returned to teaching at the Franklin Central School and retired in 1973. She spent winters in Lakeland, Florida for 14 years with her eldest daughter. In 2000, she moved to Almond, New York to her daughter’s home for the summers and spent winters in Cary, North Carolina to be near her son.
She is survived by two children, Virginia (John) McCarthy of Almond, New York and George Fowlston of Cary, North Carolina; 4 grandchildren, Kenneth (Wanda) Fowlston, Sandra (David) Washburn, Deborah Billings, Amy Smith and 4 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil S. Fowlston in 1984, her eldest daughter, Fayette J. Fowlston in 2004 and her daughter-in-law, Linda A. (Bryden) Fowlston in 2007.
