From an unidentified contemporary newspaper: Cloice Eugene Barnum, age 78, of rural Stryker, passed away Monday afternoon in Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice. He was born in Stryker, to the late Herbert B. and Leota May (Stauffer) Barnum. He married Mary Woolard on August 14, 1953 in Bath, NC and she preceded him in death on February 25, 2006. He was a lifelong area farmer and also employed at A. Schulman Co., Bryan Custom Plastics, Hayes-Albion, and retired from Trine. Cloice was a graduate of Stryker High School. He was a Korean War veteran stationed at Cherry Point, N.C., serving in the Marine Corp. He was an active member of Stryker American Legion Post 60. He was a member of Stryker United Methodist Church and was a licensed private pilot. Cloice was a member of the Superior Masonic Lodge #179 and received his 50 year pin this year.
Survivors: Son, David (Diane) Barnum, Stryker, three daughters, Debra (Rod) Britenriker, West Unity, Kate (Herman) Frank, Stryker, Karen (Cliff) Vandemark, Hicksville. Grandchildren: Ryan (Amy) Huffman, David (Sue) Barnum, Justin (Crystal) Sims, Amber Austin, Brooks Frank. Step-Grandchildren: Kristian (Denny) Spangler, Juliana Vandemark, Tiffany Schang, Tracy (Steve) Mahoney, Matt Britenriker, Melanie Hausch, Wendy Edwards; several great-grandchildren.
Cloice is preceded in death by parents, wife, brothers, Herbert and Leland, and grandchildren, Eric Huffman and Randi Baldwin.
Funeral service: 11:00 a.m. Friday August 21, 2009 in Stryker United Methodist Church with Pastor Crystal Goodnight officiating. Interment is in Oakwood Cemetery, Stryker, Ohio with military honors accorded by the Stryker American Legion Post 60 Honor Guard.
