A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From The Tribune, San Luis Obispo, California, September 16, 2004: Anne B. Sefton, 56, of Paso Robles, passed away Sept. 8, 2004, in Palo Alto at Stanford University Medical Center, after losing a seven-week battle with organ failure caused by an apparent negative reaction to an antibiotic. She was surrounded by family at the time of her death.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at St. James Episcopal Church. Committal will be at 10 a.m. prior to the service at the Paso Robles District Cemetery.
Anne was born April 12, 1948, to James K. and Barbara A. Barnum in Fresno. A graduate of Bullard High School in 1966, she entered Cal Poly, SLO. While there, she performed with the Sextet Choral Group and in 1970 was elected Poly Royal queen. Shortly thereafter, Anne became a gold key graduate with a bachelor's degree in history and a minor in music.
In June of 1970 Anne married Stephen B. Sefton, her husband of 34 years, and completed her elementary school teaching credential during their first year of marriage. A dedicated and loving teacher of 30 years, she taught in Fresno, Lockwood and Paso Robles. In her tenure she fulfilled numerous leadership roles and received several awards. She served as GATE coordinator, was a Mentor and Master Teacher, named Who's Who Among American Teachers and Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year and was nominated for national recognition as Disney Teacher of the Year.
Anne spent the bulk of her career teaching third grade at Bauer-Speck Elementary School. Her desire to give wholeheartedly of herself to her students led to numerous personal accomplishments. Anne assisted in creating the GATE program and adoption of the language arts program district wide, as well as founded the annual Almond Blossom Speech Festival. In addition, she was instrumental in creating the school/business partnership with the Main Street Association, coordinated the design and construction of the annual Bauer-Speck School Pioneer Day float, and established the District Art Docent Program, for which she was the Bauer-Speck coordinator.
Because of her love of art, Anne became an accomplished artist. In addition to producing works for personal gratification and her classroom, she used her artistic creativity to design and assist in painting a large wall mural for the Bauer-Speck amphitheater.
Anne was extremely active in the Paso Robles community. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and was a member of the choir for many years. She also devoted her time participating as a member in the Historical Society, Pioneer Pages Publishing Committee, the Pioneer Museum, the exhibit design committee for the Paso Robles Children's Museum and formerly served on the board of directors of the Main Street Association. Anne incorporated Off Vine Productions, a nonprofit organization for the purpose of presenting annual historic Paso Robles theater productions with performances by Bauer-Speck children.
Anne is lovingly survived by her husband, Stephen; daughter Katherine Anne of San Francisco; brother James R. Barnum and wife Patty of Mountain View; Miriam House and husband Roy of Phoenix; James Sefton and wife Susan of Hacienda Heights; one niece; three nephews; and two grand-nephews.
