From the Leelanau Enterprise, Michigan, July 12, 2012: Muriel K. Barnum, age 95, long time resident of Lake Leelanau passed away peacefully Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Hope Village. She was born September 17, 1916 in Great Falls, Montana to George and Hester (Nicholas) Kennea. Muriel traveled a lot in her earlier years. After surviving the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 Muriel’s family returned to their homeland of Wales in 1920. In 1925 the family moved to Montreal for 2 years; finally settling in New York, NY, where Muriel’s father worked on, among other buildings, the Chrysler Building as a stone mason. Muriel graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1934. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1938 from Sparrow Hospital Nursing School. On May 19, 1940 she married the late Herbert H. Barnum. Together they raised 2 children. Muriel worked as a registered nurse, until her retirement, in the Fisher Building in Detroit. Herbert and Muriel retired to Lake Leelanau and spent many wonderful years in the area. Muriel was an accomplished seamstress, making everythingShe is survived by a daughter Vickie (Rick) Brown of Leland and a son Carl (Mary) Barnum of East Jordan; 4 grandchildren: Nicholas and Matthew Brown and Gloria and Amber Barnum.Besides her parents, Muriel was preceded in death by her husband Herbert in 1986.
