Published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Feb. 21, 2016: Barnum, Barbara M. (1925 - 2015). Barbara died on December 15, 2015 at home with 2 of her children present. Her beloved husband of 53 years was the late David L. Barnum. She leaves behind 4 children - Carol Barnum, Sandra Sermos, Josh Barnum, and Chris Barnum; her brother Allan Meltzer, and step-sister Maxine Smith, along with 5 Grand Children, 2 Great Grand Children, and numerous nieces, and nephews, friends and relatives who will miss her. Winner of the Boston Herald spelling championship in 1939, earning a B.A. from Simmons College, a Ph. D. from Georgia State - pioneering sex education, and having held careers that included teaching, teaching teachers, and starting a school for juveniles locked in detention before moving to St Louis in the early 80's to become an editor for McGraw Hill, teaching in the SIU dental school, and ending her professional career as a therapist with an independent practice. And that is only work - she lived a very full life. She also more than fulfilled a lifelong desire to travel, having been to 106 countries before she stopped foreign travel. A lifetime fighter for liberal causes and women's rights, only loss of eyesight and hearing stopped her from working on a Democratic campaign as she had for Obama.
