Adelbert Royal Chapman was born on 24 February 1846 in Michigan, son of Hiram Bostwick Chapman and Elizabeth Chamberlain. On 3 September 1850, Royal lived with his parents and siblings, Elbridge, Clarence, Alanson, and Asenath in Reading, Hillsdale County, Michigan. He attended school in the last year.
On 10 July 1860, Royal lived with his parents and siblings, Elbridge, Clarence, Alanson, Asenath, Lucy, Wellington, Almon, and Charlotte in Reading, Hillsdale County, Michigan. He attended school in the previous year.
Adelbert enlisted as a Private in Company L of the 11th Michigan Cavalry on 24 August 1864 at Reading, Michigan. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant on 25 October 1864. Adelbert was mustered out on 15 June 1865 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Adelbert was married on 23 April 1868 in Van Buren County, Michigan to Annette Maria Barnum. Annette was born on 22 June 1845 in Michigan.
On 5 July 1870, Abel and Annette and two boarders lived in Reading. Adelbert was working in a retail hardware store while Annette was keeping house.
On 25 June 1880, the couple lived in Reading. He was working as a "capitalist" while Annett was keeping house.
In 1890, Adelbert lived in Reading, Hillsdale County, Michigan.Â
On 11 June 1900, the couple lived in Petoskey, Emmet County, Michigan with a servant, Elsie Lockwood. Adelbert was working as a lumberman.
On 29 April 1910, Adelbert and Nettie lived in an apartment at 401 S. Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. He was working as a banker.
Annette died on 7 March 1916 in Los Angeles, California.
On 3 January 1920, Adelbert continued living at the apartment at 401 S. Grand. He was no longer working.
He applied for a Civil War invalid's pension, apparently in the 1920s.
Adelbert died on 15 June 1924 in Hillsdale County, Michigan.
Adelbert and Annette were buried in Oakwood Cemetery. The couple did not having any children.Â
