Harriet Elizabeth Wight was  born Apr 2, 1848, married July 9, 1873, John Hall Sherratt, born in Burritt, Winnebago Co., Ill., April 12, 1844, son of Thomas Sherratt (September 27, 1811—March 29, 1863), born in Oxford, England, and Lydia Holmes (September 12,1822—December 27, 1878) born in Bradford, England. Although thus of English ancestry, John H. Sherratt was a loyal citizen of his adopted country. He entered the United States army in August 7, 1862, as member of Co. K., 74th Illinois infantry, and was mustered out in 1866, as captain of Co. E. 42 U.S. Infantry, colored troops. After his marriage he and his wife resided in Macon City, Missouri. Upon the death of Mrs. Wight's father, in 1877, the Sherratts returned to Rockford, and occupied t he old Wight homestead at No. 202 South First St., where they now reside. Mr. Sherratt is Secretary of the Forest City Fire Insurance Company—an enterprising and successful business man. He is a member of the Illinois Commandery of the Loyal Legion. On April 16, 1889,during his absence in California, he was elected mayor of Rockford.
