A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
In March 2017 Brad Douglas, bradsholto@hotmail.com, stated: Have been looking for the maiden name of Catherine Barnum 1753 (my Ancestor) for years and decided to start looking at her sons' names again. She had a son named Willard and I found a Catherine Willard born the right year in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Catherine Barnum died in Stockbridge, which was close, so I made a family tree for her and inserted my mother's DNA as hers and got Ancestry hints right away! So, I looked at the Willard family closer and noticed in a book about the Willard family that her brother Daniel's will was mentioned in a footnote of the book, it stated that Catherine may have been alive at the time of the will 1819. I was disappointed because my Catherine Barnum was dead in 1817, so I looked for and found the will, which mentioned her husband Moses Barnum and that she had recently died. It also left their Cow and feather bed to Moses Barnum's new wife Electa (Sheldon/Tracy/Barnum). The will also mentioned her sisters Mary and Mercy Willard as wives of Vosburgh and Center. Nobody of those families has this info in their trees, so I knew I had found something previously overlooked! Also, regarding Electa Barnum, she was born Electa Sheldon not Tracy as shown on your site and many trees. Tracy was her first husband, who died.
Transcriptions from Daniel's will:
1) "....is herself living. Katy, his youngest sister, married Moses Barnum of Stockbridge & has died within the last year, has left two daughters living (as I am informed). The said Hopkins therefore prays that the will of the said Daniel Willard may be proved & established. Lenoa (sic), April 6, 1819."
2) "bequests - My will is that my said wife shall give to Electa Barnum one cow & one feather bed."
