“Increase Graves (428) was born 27 July 1752, was baptized 21 Oct. 1752, both at East Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT, and died 24 Dec. 1831 at his home in Bridport, Addison Co., VT. He married Mercy Crippen. She was born in May 1758 and died 5 Aug. 1803, aged 45 years. He married second Susannah (Stedson or Stetson) Bascom. She was the widow of Joshua Bascom of Brandon, VT, and died 3 Dec. 1846, aged 73 years. She had three daughters from her first marriage. They were Lydia Bascom, who married David A. Crane, 8 July 1817; Mary Bascom, who married Ward E. Hunt; and Sophia Bascom, who married Calvin Sollace, 3 Jan. 1819.
“Increase served in the Rev. War as sergeant in 3rd Co., 9th Regt., Albany, NY Co. Militia under Colonel Van Ness. He settled first as minister at Rupert, VT from 1786 to 1793 and then at Bridport, VT, where he was installed 29 Feb. 1794, the first settled minister of Bridport, receiving the ministerial right of land given under seal by his majesty, King George III. By the charter of the town in 1761 the town paid the expense of entertaining the minister with their delegates present at the installation. He officiated as pastor at Bridport for about 25 years. He was a man of fine intellect and an acceptable preacher of good judgement and strong orthodox views. He was a large man of fine appearance. He had 14 children by his first marriage and 7 by his second marriage.”
