The Smiths were members of the Bethlehem Methodist Episcopal Church in Davie County, North Carolina and many members of the family are buried in the church cemetery there. Several in the family were Methodist ministers, as were many in the later generations across the country.

Samuel was living with his daughter Jane Beeding at the time of his death.
