A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Apollos Warner BARNUM

From the San Bernardino County Sun, California, Tuesday, January 23, 1912: Another of San Bernardino’s prominent and beloved citizens passed to the great beyond Sunday (Jan. 21) morning when death claimed A. W. Barnum at his G Street home after an illness extending over a long period. For a long time his condition had been serious and it had been recognized that the end must come soon, it being none the loss a shock to his family, his business associates and friends. He had been a resident here for the past 30 years and had filled a large place in the community. He had led in many movements for the betterment of the citizenship of this city was a progressive business man and ever attentive to anything that meant the up building of the city either in business lines or raising the standard of morality.
He came to San Bernardino in 1882, and at once entered into the stationery business, which he continued until the time of his death, though he was compelled some time ago to surrender the active management of the business to his son, J. Harold Barnum.
From the time he came to San Bernardino he was active in the work of the First Baptist Church. In practically all of those years he had held some official position in the church either as deacon, financial secretary, treasurer or trustee.
Mr. Barnum was born in New York City January 1, 1848, and was therefore 64 years of age at his death. For several years he was engaged in business in New Haven, Connecticut from which city he came to San Bernardino.
He leaves one daughter, Miss Emma Barnum, also one son, J. Harold Barnum both of this city. His wife died about four years ago and that fact weighed heavily on Mr. Barnum, his decline dating largely from that time.
