From the Putnam County Courier
, Carmel, New York, Saturday, December 29, 1855: We are pained to chronicle the sudden death of Capt. Elijah Barnum of Southeast, New York which occurred on Friday afternoon of last week, under circumstances the most painful. While on the road leading from Dykeman's Station to his residence, his horse became frightened at a pack-pedlar who was resting himself by the wayside and suddenly springing to the side of the road jerked the wagon so violently as to throw Mr. Barnum upon the ground. Unfortunately he fell upon his head and shoulders, and, as is supposed, ruptured a blood vessel. He was immediately conveyed to the nearest dwelling, but before medical aid could be procured, and before any member of his family arrived, he expired.
He was about sixty years of age, and one of the most respected citizens of our county. Loved most by those who knew him best his melancholy decease will be deeply deplored by a large circle of admiring friends. With the afflicted family we sympathize most fervently.
Gravestone inscription: In Memory of Elijah Barnum who died Dec. 21. 1855 aged 71 y'rs & 23 d's "This is the dust of earth". This marker is broken into 16 pieces; it has a carvers mark on the bottom right side "W. Cogswell, Marbled..." (probably Marble Dale, Connecticut).
