Notes for Hugh Goff GEAR

Hugh was born in Dublin while his father John, an English soldier, was stationed there. Supposedly, in trying to escape war service Hugh stowed away on what he thought was a ship to Australia. It turned out to be a ship bound for Boston and he worked his passage across, landed in America 1850 and then went west to Wisconsin. He spent a year working 160 acres in the extreme northwest corner of Calumet County and then moved back to Winnebago County, where he took a government land grant. Shortly after that, in 1857, he became the second husband of Sybil D. (Childs) Newman. The timeline in this story is a little uncertain, since it suggest that he took about 5 years to get from Boston to Wisconsin. However, the 1850 and 1857 dates appear to be correct.

Persons named Hugh Gear who were enumerated in the 1841 England Census for Ilfracombe, Braunton, Devon and the 1851 Wales Census for Margam, Glamorgan are probably not this same individual.
