Notes for Robert HATHERLY

=== Parentage; Date and Place of Birth ===The parentage and date and place of birth of Robert Hatherly, father of Timothy Hatherly and Elgin (Hatherly) Sillis of Scituate, Plymouth Colony, is unknown. Based on the date of baptism of his first known child (1586), Robert was probably born sometime in 1555-1565. No birth or baptismal record has been found, however, for a Robert Hatherly in Devonshire during that time period, mostly like due not to a lack of Roberts but to a lack of records. The closest birth or baptismal record that has been found if for the baptism of a Robert Hatherly, son of a [[Hatherly-2|Thomas Hatherly]], in Barnstaple, Devonshire on April 28, 1543. While Thomas of Barnstaple is a possible candidate for a father, he is perhaps not the best one, in part because the date of baptism is before the most likely range for Robert's birth. In addition, however, genuki.org's list of Devonshire wills shows the will of a John Hatherlegh who died in Winkleigh, Devonshire in 1579 and the will of a Hugh Hatherleigh who died in Winkleigh, Devonshire in 1583. Given that Robert's children were baptized n Winkleigh, these wills suggest that Robert was probably the son of either John or Hugh or some other Hatherly in Winkleigh.

=== Marriage ===Robert married a woman named Elinor, who, after his death, married William Mortimer (alias Tanner). Her maiden name is unknown. Her first name is established by the will of Elinor Mortimor (alias Tanner), which refers to her son "Tymoty Hatherley and daughter Eylin Hanver." No record of Robert's marriage to Elinor has been found and the date and place of their marriage is unknown. Based on the date of baptism of their first-known child (1586), they were probably married about 1585.

=== Children ===Robert and Elinor had the following children, both baptized in Winkleigh, Devonshire:
# [[Hatherly-3|Eglin]], bpt. June 8, 1586
# [[Hatherly-4|Timothy]], bpt. September 29, 1588
Some family genealogies show that Robert and Ellinor also had children named John and Elizabeth. That proposition is apparently based on the will of a Nicholas Mortimore of Winkleigh, Devonshire, proved in 1613, which makes bequests to an Elizabeth Hatherleigh and a John Hatherleigh. However, since Elizabeth and John Hatherleigh were not mentioned in Elinor Mortimore's will, and there is no other evidence indicating that they were children of Robert and Ellinor, it seems unlikely that they were their children.

=== Death ===The date of Robert's death is uncertain. Due to the absence of evidence of any child born after 1588, it is reasonably probable that he died about that date. He was certainly dead well before Elinor's second husband made his will in 1614.
