Hypostatic bronchopneumonia results from the collection of fluid in the dorsal region of the lungs and occurs especially in those (as the bedridden or elderly) who are confined to a supine position for extended periods. Cachexia, or wasting syndrome, is the loss of weight, muscle atrophy, fatigue, weakness, and significant loss of appetite, often a result of cancer such as the liver carcinoma from which Lottie suffered.
