The West or Birchard yard was laid out as a place for the dead near the beginning of the present century. The bounds have since been enlarged so that it now contains two acres. Mrs. Stephen Barnum was riding by this place as early as 1798; casting her eyes upon it she remarked, "What a beautiful spot this would be for a graveyard." Subsequently it was selected for this use, and Mrs. Stephen Barnum was the first person whose grave was made in it.
