From the American Sentinel, Middletown, Connecticut, Wednesday, December 5, 1832, Volume X, Issue 519, Page 2: Bethel, Fairfield, Connecticut. On Thursday last, Mr. Eli H. Barnum, of this town, about 40 years old, while ascending a steep hill in Bethel, with an ox team and cart loaded with grain, accidentally fell from the top of the cart, on which he was sitting, and was instantly killed, the wheel crossing diagonally across his neck and head.
