wrote in December 2004: My great-grandmother, Josephine Ward Patten, was married to Orrin Samuel Barnum. They had one daughter, Grace Ferry Barnum. Sometime in the very early 1900's, Mr. Barnum "left" his wife and daughter while they were living in New York. My grandmother was told that he had he died; she didn't know otherwise until many years later, when he contacted her a few years before his death (and many years after his first wife's death). My grandmother was raised by her grandparents, William Swift and Mary Patten. I don't know any more of the story, e.g., why my great-grandfather left, the circumstances of his second marriage, his additional children (who would have been my grandmother's half-brother and sisters and my mother's aunts and uncle)".
