Note: Galicia is a historical region in Central Europe that presently straddles the border between Poland and Ukraine. In 1772, Galicia was the largest part of the area annexed by Austria in the First Partition of Poland. From 1873 until the end of WWI, in 1918, Galicia was de facto an autonomous province of Austria-Hungary with Polish and, to a much lesser degree, Ukrainian or Ruthenian, as official languages.
